“Fresh Start is family. “Many years ago I worked in addictions prevention and treatment. Also, my family has not been left unscarred by addictions. I know what a devastating role addictions has in our communities. When I was approached to be on the board, Fresh Start had just opened a new facility and I knew adaptation was ahead. Still there was the real possibility of more challenges and growth. Having served on other non-profit boards I was pleased to offer my experience in support.”

“Addiction is highly prevalent and affects everyone. I have a strong interest in supporting Fresh Start which offers an integrated approach of in-house and in-community support to individuals and their families. This approach and the dedicated staff at Fresh Start offer individuals the best chance for lasting sobriety.”

My first recollection of an alcoholic was my father when I was around six. That same year he joined AA, got sober and went on to live an incredible rewarding life. He often said that the program saved his life. I guess you could say I followed in my father's footsteps finding sobriety at the age of 34. The last 28 years have been a constant reminder of what one can achieve when you get clean. I have witnessed firsthand what addiction looks like in the eyes of a family. I have lost a son and brother to drugs. If my being on the board of Fresh Start results in saving just one soul from the disease of addiction and then I will consider my time well served.

Addiction has impacted both my personal and business life .. I would like to help both the addict and their families battle this terrible disease and the epidemic it has become.

“ I have watched first hand what addiction can do to the lives of individuals and the ones that love them. If I can even help one person or family to not have to go through those struggles I have made the right choice to help Fresh Start “

Starting May 28th, my goal is to cycle across Canada inspiring others to be vulnerable and ask for help; as well as join the fitness community and live a healthy lifestyle. My route from St. John's to Victoria will incorporate stops along the way at 10 or more treatment centres. I hope to share my story, help make connections to fitness, and donate $1000 to help set up fitness programs in the centres.

Introducing Connie, the face behind the front desk. She is most in touch with waitlist clients, in-house clients and alumni. The waitlist clients generally number 100 or so and each one of them is required to call daily to let us know how they are doing.  Admittance to the day program, or the residential program, is done from the main waitlist.  We have other waitlists for specific population groups and they are separate from the main list. I talk to many mothers and fathers who are trying to find help for their child and I try to provide them with information that will help. I receive calls from as far away as Nova Scotia. Spend time talking with the parents about our Family Healing Program and how it will help them in their understanding of the addict/alcoholic.  They are grateful for the information I provide. All of these different contacts are satisfying and I am grateful to be of help. I also let all of these contacts know that I am also in recovery and we share and laugh about certain circumstances.
