Recovery is Possible. 2020 has been an incredibly challenging year for people in recovery and we are very grateful for the support that you have given to Fresh Start. We wish to express how important your continued support is for our ongoing success in transforming and saving lives.

Your Support has helped Fresh Start … and we are Grateful!

Your support this year has provided the funding that Fresh Start has needed to ensure that the staff members who are vital to the recovery and wellbeing of the men and families we serve have been able to continue the lifesaving work that we do every day. Your continued support means that the men and families we serve will continue to get first class treatment in a long term recovery focused home.

A Second Fresh Start in Alberta

In early November, Fresh Start took over operations at a Lethbridge recovery centre that has been around for 44 years called South Country. Our lead counsellor and Fresh Start employee for the past ten years – Tony Kokol – has assumed the responsibility of instilling Fresh Start’s nationally recognized, award-winning recovery program in this facility now called Fresh Start South Country. This new centre allows us to not only help men struggling with the disease of addiction, but women too. We are able to broaden our recovery reach in Southern Alberta.

Your support has kept us strong and allowed Fresh Start to continue to evolve and improve the program to be able to expand and help more people access treatment.

National Recognition for Excellence: 6th straight year as Top 10 Impact Charity

Every November, Charity Intelligence Canada releases their rankings of various charities, non-profits and NGO’s across Canada in their Five Star (formerly Four Star) ratings, Top 10 Impact Charity, Top 10 Canadian Impact Charity, Top 5 Calgary Impact Charity and Canada’s Top 100 Rated Charities. Thanks to your support, the results for 2020 put Fresh Start in each of these categories again.

How You can help now: You are in a unique position to be able to help Fresh Start by spreading the word about the great work that YOU have been instrumental in supporting. Your voice can help to inspire others who are looking for a great cause that has great results that impact all of us for the better.

Here are examples of great opportunities to share:

Participate in GivingTuesday on December 1stOn GivingTuesday 2020, Fresh Start will be active again this year with the “hashtag” #RecoveryBehindTheMask along with #GivingTuesdayCA, #GivingTuesdayYYC and #UNSelfie. There will be a few different ways to engage and give.

First, please follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn and share our content so that others can participate too.

There is still $100,000 left in matching funds courtesy of Matt Rumpel Family Foundation, Sam Ousher Switzer Charitable Foundation, Lois and Dick Haskayne, The Alvin and Mona Libin Foundation and Jim Saunders. This means that for each and every dollar you, your family members and friends donate, an equal amount will be matched dollar for dollar on GivingTuesday and throughout December until all matching funds are exhausted.
As has been the case in other years, there will be different methods to donate including:
Cheques: Must be received on or before December 1st

Online: Direct to Fresh Start – 100% matched internally – 100% matched internally
GlobalGiving – 100% Matched Internally + 100% matching through GG*

*$1,000,000 US in matching funds worldwide from GlobalGiving up to a maximum of $2,500 $US PLUS the Fresh Start 100% dollar for dollar match. This is a great vehicle for sharing with friends and family in the United States or England as their donations are eligible for tax deductions in their country (not available to them if they donate in Canada).

In 2019 your generosity set a record for Fresh Start’s total donations for GivingTuesday at $27,750. This year’s goal is $40,000 in donations (when this is added to the $40,000 in matching, it will make Fresh Start’s 2020 GivingTuesday total the biggest ever at $80,000)

Become a new GlobalGiving monthly donor

Dec. 14 -18 will be the week where GlobalGiving will match new monthly donors at 200%, with the Fresh Start match, this could end up being a 5:1 match. If Fresh Start gets 17 new donors (monthly or one time) in December, we stand a good chance of becoming the #1 ranked charity in Canada for GlobalGiving (we’re #2 right now).

What does that mean? When large multinational companies who are partnered with GlobalGiving look for a charity to connect with in Canada, they will look at the #1 position. It would be very lucrative to receive donations from GlobalGiving partners like Ford, Nike, 3M, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook and Google, so consider being a new donor or inspiring friends and family in the US to do so and make a huge difference.

Again, we are very grateful for your past support and thank you for considering making next month truly a December to remember by supporting #RecoveryBehindTheMask.
