Cycling Cross-Canada for Addiction Recovery Awareness

Kyle Williams had a vision. Having just completed his 12-week treatment program at Fresh Start Recovery Centre, he developed a love for fitness along the way. Shortly after group completed he went on a family vacation to Penticton, BC.  When they were to return, Kyle told his family and decided that he was going to ride his single-gear bicycle back to Calgary. During the 620-kilometre ride that spanned five days, Kyle had the opportunity to reflect on his journey and think about who he wanted to be going forward. He formed KARL, an acronym for his personal values: Kindness, Authenticity, Reliability, and Love.

Kyle also reflected on the importance of exercise and fitness on his recovery. He arrived in Calgary determined to share his values as well as his own experience with others in hopes that they can find the same strength in recovery through fitness. This vision became Kyle’s passion and over the coming months he formed the framework of Changing Gears.

Changing Gears is a campaign that is sharing Kyle’s story with recovery centre’s across Canada from June-August 2017. He has decided to elevate his love of cycling to an 8,309 KM ride across the country in which he will visit 11 centres to share his story and provide resources to enable the creation of programs between those recovery centres and local fitness communities.

He will be cycling home to Calgary July 20th around 2:00pm and will return home to speak at Fresh Start Recovery Centre on Friday the 21st at 10:30 am.  He will be sharing his story of addiction, the impact recovery and fitness has on his life, and sharing stories of the treatment centre’s and the people he has met across the country these last seven weeks.

Mission Fit

Ron Jarrett, owner of Mission Fitness is what a committed and helpful community partner is all about. He trains the clients in the house weekly and believes that true strength and progress can only be made from a solid foundation.  That foundation includes alignment, mobility and stability, and must address any muscular imbalances, weaknesses and lack of connection.  Achieving this level means the body is able to progress safely without fear of injury.
