Ride to Recovery - St. John's to Victoria

A year ago around this time I was stumbling around unknowingly about to hit rock bottom. My alcoholism and drug addiction had gotten out of control when my uncle intervened and told me that I did not need to live this way, that there was other options then this impending doom. I went through the 12 week treatment program at Fresh Start Recovery Centre in Calgary, Alberta and have not only found a new life in recovery but a burning desire to give back.

Recovery to me means that I haven't had a sip of alcohol or used drugs, and I live with purpose. Just recently I celebrated 1 year clean and sober. I strongly believe that without the fitness community and cycling I would not be where I am today - it saved my life. I want to be able to show others that they have the ability to be a part of this community and that it will make a huge difference in their recovery. This past year I have become a part of the running community in Calgary through YYC Run Crew, I am a Motivator at YYC Cycle, and I am a Co-Leader of November Project YYC. This fitness community is incredible. I want to share that and make those connections across the country.

Starting May 28th, my goal is to cycle across Canada inspiring others to be vulnerable and ask for help; as well as join the fitness community and live a healthy lifestyle. My route from St. John's to Victoria will incorporate stops along the way at 10 or more treatment centres. I hope to share my story, help make connections to fitness, and donate $1000 to help set up fitness programs in the centres.

The end goal is to set up my own centre in Calgary that ties fitness to recovery and facilitates life change. The centre would offer fitness classes, mobility clinics, yoga and other training to those who want to turn their lives around.

The funds raised will help me to:

- Get to St. John's
- Have a chase vehicle
- Eat (this is semi-necessary)
- Rest (whether this is camp or stay in some accommodations)
- Blog the trip and help de-stigmatize addiction in Canada.
- Donate $1,000 at every treatment centre stop, facilitating a fitness program, and connection to that community.

The remainder of the funds will help me take people to fitness classes who want to join and ultimately help to set up a recovery community back in Calgary. If you would like to donate to this ride please click here.  Every dollar raised will help raise awareness and will help support the goal of incorporating fitness at centres who can use the support. Thank you kindly, Kyle Williams
