It’s the ability to love and be loved, a willingness to forgive, it is compassion and celebrating the present. It is  also something you want to pay forward.”

So even when I am standing in my shoes, I am not there. I have mental choices and to be present and mindful. That is a choice. My mind will wander at the drop of a hat. But I can choose otherwise and bring myself back to the present. I can choose to be where my feet are located.

I heard a great comment at a meeting recently. The person sharing said, “I can choose to be where my feet are located, or not.”

I can choose to be where my feet are located. I can choose to be present where I am. I can choose to grow where I am planted.

We are hungering for stories of meaning, of relationship, of relating, of connection, of hearing about people having the courage to feel their fear and do it anyway.  We need one another’s stories. They help us grow and they help us soften. As Arthur Frank writes in The Wounded Storyteller, “To tell one’s own story, a person needs others’ stories.” Here is mine...

I edge God out of my life and consciousness. I almost never announce or declare in a loud voice or clear thought that I am terminating either my connection with God or my conscious contact with God. The separation and departure from God is always less clear. It is subtler and creeps rather than jumps. It is a process of Edging God Out rather than ruling Him out.

My name is Richy and I am an addict in recovery.

I have been battling addiction for 15 years. During that time, I have been in and out of correctional institutions and treatment centers. During my drug abuse, I ignored my physical health. I was skinny, sleep deprived and didn’t eat. I experienced psychosis from being awake for long periods of time. The people around me were concerned about my physical state. I was constantly stressed; a constant battle finding ways and means to get more. I was angry, and I took it out on everybody that I came across.
